Director of Advanced Industrial Design for Johnson Controls, he's responsible for overseeing product concept development, future product conceptualization and visualization for all advanced seating, and interior industrial design studios globally. Prior to this appointment, Fluharty served as advanced design manager for the former Prince Corporation (acquired by Johnson Controls in 1996) since 1995, where he oversaw operations at the Holland, Michigan studio.

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier, designer of the Getty Center in Los Angeles and Church of the Year 2000 now under construction in Rome, will speak at the Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan Ave. at 7pm in the Rubloff Auditorium. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

"Lifelong Learning".

The 2000 Midwest District Conference is centered on the "interaction of learning". Speakers will discuss educational transformation in the creative process. Conference attendees will participate in a "design about" setting, where students, professionals, and educators will sit together at round tables for discussion after each speaker/topic. May 19: An Evening with Pattie Moore - from Loewy to Gore and then some...

Please join us for an unforgettable evening with Pattie Moore, an internationally renowned gerontologist and designer serving as a leading authority on the requirements and behaviors of the elderly and all people as they progress throughout their lifespan. Moore promotes accessibility and usability through "Universal Design", a methodology for which Moore is credited as a founder. For a period of three years (1979-1982), in an exceptional and daring experiment, Moore traveled throughout the United States and Canada disguised as a woman more than eighty years of age. She writes about this experience in her book titled, " Disguised: A True Story".

Ms. Moore holds undergraduate degrees in Graphic Design and Industrial and Environmental Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology and Counseling, and a Masters of Education in Human Development (Social Gerontology) from Columbia University, completion of advanced studies in Biomechanics at New York's University Medical School and Rusk Institute. Moore has been seen on Oprah, Jay Leno and the Tonight Show, David Letterman and the Late Night Show, and Phil Donohue, among others. She is also a frequent guest lecturer and has had feature articles in nearly all major US publications. Moore currently resides in Phoenix, AZ.

June 12: Ben Fether lecture: Design As It Affects The Future Office.

Ben Fether is co-director, with Richard Miles, of the Fether Miles Group which includes FM Design and FM Model makers. His interest in design and social context has influenced the FM philosophy and the evolution of it's comprehensive approach to design and development. Ben is involved in the ongoing development of FM and in many of its current projects. These range from consumer technology products, furniture and packaging, to transportation and building systems. Awards: G Mark; NeoCon; IIDA; iF; IDEA and inclusion in the MOMA permanent collection. Ben is Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers and of the Royal Society of Arts. He is an International Member of the Industrial Designers Society of America.

September 18-20: IDSA National Education Conference, "Education Gumbo", University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, LA.

The conference will kick off at noon on Sept. 18th. In addition to paper presentations, we'll learn about the new think3 software donation program. Joe Costello, chair and CEO of think3 will challenge the paradigm of education instruction methods (we want to listen!) Representatives of ITEA (International Technology Education Association) will talk about the new IDSA/ITEA initiative to deliver industrial design education to K-12 schools. After the education conference concludes at noon on Wednesday Sept. 20th we will provide a bus to take you to the Fairmont Hotel-the headquarters of "Design Gumbo," so that you can attend the opening of the Design Gallery and national conference.


September 20-23: IDSA International Design Conference - "Design Gumbo", Fairmont Hotel, New Orleans, LA.

Come join IDSA in the Big Easy to catch up on some of the latest trends and recharge your design batteries. "Design Gumbo," which will combine concrete learning opportunities with a little whimsy and inspiration, will center around three themes: "Cookin' up the Future," a look at "what's next" in design; "Thinkin' Outside the Bowl," a focus on different ways to look at the issues we face; and "If You Can't Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen," an attempt to push attendees out of their comfort zones.

October 31: IDSA Halloween with Redmoon Theater

Please join the Chicago Chapter IDSA to experience Redmoon Theater Group's 6th Annual All Hallow's Eve Ritual Celebration at Logan Square. Meet at 6:30 at The Boulevard Cafe, 3137 W Logan Blvd, for a ritual toast and conversation. We will leave the Cafe at 7:30 pm sharp to walk the strip and experience the show.

Wear a constume and expose your eyes and ears to a most memorable experience. The Redmoon show and conversation are free of charge. Eating and drinking at the Cafe is on you. For additional information on Redmoon see www.redmoon.org.
