IDSA-CHI/WI/MN Annual Summer Picnic '05
Saturday, August 20th 12:30-5:00
Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Park West of the village of Eagle, WI on State Highway 59
additional information at: http://idsawi.org/event_popups/aug20_05.shtml

Looks like it's time to dust off an old summer tradition. This month again will bring the IDSA Annual Summer Picnic in coordination with the Chicago and Minnesota chapters. We have reserved the Ottawa Lake Picnic Shelter "C", which has an open covered shelter with a charcoal-type grill and electrical outlets - this is the same shelter as last year. Volleyball, horseshoe pits, and many other activities are available nearby. Children and significant others are welcome at this family friendly event. Unfortunately there are dog restrictions on all of the shelter areas, so owners who bring pets will be doing so at their own risk.

If you are interested in camping out for the weekend, there will be a group of rugged individualists you can meet up with as well - just contact your chapter chair and they will put you in touch with the right people. Picnic basics (non-alcoholic beverages, grill-ables) will be provided - attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to pass. Maps and other details will follow as the event nears.

Is this any time to be having a party?
It's the question I've been asking myself as Foresight's September 24th
"Sustainable Convergence '05" draws closer. Because of recent events, the
suffering of people in this country and abroad is in the news more than
ever. We don't have all the answers, but do believe that a strong,

residents of this city, this country and to others around the world. We
invite you to come together on for evening of camaraderie, socializing and
community-building with like-minded others.

Chicago Sustainable Design Challenges
o2-Chicago (aka the Foresight Design Initiative) is challenging designers far and wide to address issues of sustainability. o2-Chicago is hosting two short-term competitions, both of which we hope will have repercussions far beyond their limited duration. One of them was inspired by a discussion concerning plastic grocery bags conducted on this list awhile back. Both Challenges will culminate at a large (500+ people expected) gathering we're
hosting next month here in Chicago: Sustainable Convergence '05.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: 9/16/05

Design Challenge #1: "Online Edition"
Challenges communication designers to help spread the word about sustainability issues by using their creative prowess to conjure compelling web banner ads about sustainability issues/events here in Chicago (which are probably similar to issues/events elsewhere). Entries will be posted on our BelieveChicago.org sustainability hub, CenterStage.net and made available for further distribution to whomever would like to run them. www.foresightdesign.org/challenge/online/index.php

Design Challenge #2: "Paper or Plastic or...?"
Up to 2 trillion plastic bags are consumed globally each year! In its quest to see the city in which its based "evolve better," Foresight is challenging designers to think outside, well, the bag and to consider a combination of policy, communications/education, and product design solutions for this conundrum. Can designers begin to save at least one major city from this oil-consuming, environmental scourge? Finalists will get to make their case for their solutions to the gathered crowd at the Sustainable Convergence '05 on 24 September 2005 in Chicago. www.foresightdesign.org/challenge

ThickDesign05 (An Art Institute industrial design museum exhibit)
August 16 - September 28, 2005
Betty Rymer Gallery
280 South Columbus Drive

Reception: Thursday, September 8, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Curator roundtable: Thursday, September 15, 4:30 p.m.
Special lecture by Jurgen Bey: Wednesday, September 28, 6:00 p.m. School auditorium, 280 S. Columbus Drive (free admission)
ThickDesign05 examines the systems that design extends, the relations that design practices establish, and the objects that occur from these exchanges. The intention of the exhibition is to foreground the "thickening" of design by exposing creative practices that operate via augmentation, collaboration, connection and distribution: the very fabric of designed objects, events, and experiences. The exhibition will contain prototypes, projects, texts, products, media and environments from local and international designers. In addition, special display components for the exhibition will be fabricated by the curators. Designers and artists include Acconci Studio, Yves Behar+fuseproject, Inside Outside / Petra Blaisse, Martin Boyce, collective_difference_studio, FREITAG lab. ag, Herbst Lazar Bell (HLB), IDEO, Karim Rashid Inc., Enzo Mari, C.E.B. Reas, Simon Starling, Adam Whiton and Yolita Nugent.
