The collection is meant for the contract market segment which employs collection items in the designing of public areas (restaurants, hotels, offices, museums, etc.) and has been presented on the occasion of the last Milan Furniture Fair in April. "Project Collection" is the result of experience gathered over B&B Italia's 40-year history and successful collaborations with prestigious construction firms and famous architecture studios. Antonio Citterio, Monica Armani, Jeffrey Bernett, Naoto Fukasawa and Patricia Urquiola designed single pieces, marked by a personality of their own and featuring the typical values of design and technology: ergonomics, research and functionality. Together with other products by Chris Hawker and Uwe Fisher, which were already part of B&B Italia's contemporary collection and have been wisely reshaped with a new design sensibility, "Project Collection" form an independent offering with a specific series of covers and a dedicated distribution network.

LEARNING & THE BRAIN WITH DESIGN IN MIND ~ THE ESSENTIALS
Designers play a significant role in engaging, motivating, and empowering users as they learn how to interact with products via their qualities, characteristics, features, and attributes. These elements define the user's learning experience, actions, and behaviors while connecting with products. Neuroscientists have learned more in the last ten years regarding how our brain works than in the prior 100 years combined. Educators and psychologists are now applying this research to understand how we learn and what motivates us. Integrating this knowledge into the design and learning process can prove to have a substantial impact on the user's experience.

Please join us for a focused presentation on the topic and lively discussion of how this knowledge can potentially affect your working process and outcomes. RSVP to Doris Wells-Papanek

About the Presenter
With over 25 years of experience in design, software, and education, Doris Wells-Papanek has developed corporate design strategies, managed user interface groups, taught design, researched and designed usability studies, and designed the appearance and behavior of software. She has worked with companies such as Xerox, Apple, Lotus, Hewlett-Packard, Siemens, Philips, and Intuit. Her work has led to over twenty design and utility patents. In the education sector, Doris applies brain-based research to design tailored learning tools and coaches individuals who require additional assistance to meet learning expectations, organize their time, tasks, or thoughts. As a partner of Greenleaf & Papanek Publications, Doris is a co-author of three brain-based instructional books.

IDSA Chicago Sketching Workshop with Jim Orr
Friday, October 27 - Saturday Oct 28
Columbia College, 600 S. Michigan

Sketching is core to the industrial design profession and is a vital tool for quickly and persuasively expressing your ideas. Too often our drawing skills are under developed or under utilized, resulting in incorrect perspective or lackluster execution.

Fortunately we have Jim Orr to help sharpen our pencils and show us how to breathe life back in to our work. Jim is the founder of the Advanced Formations Curriculum, developed around his commitment igniting creative brilliance in his fellow designers. Jim spent most of his career in the automobile industry, and now is a faculty professor at the Columbus College of Art & Design and conducts creativity and motivational workshops out of his own design studio. Read testimonials of Jim's workshops here.

Two full-day (9AM - 4PM) sessions are being offered:
Friday 10/27: Beginner Session: work through one- and two-point perspective drawing, from definition through construction and application.

SOLD OUT Saturday 10/28: Advanced Session: Experiment with Jim's principles of "Power Drawing" and the "Language of Line" to bring dynamic form, position and texture to your work. Participants in this session will enjoy rediscovering the passion in their drawing.

IDSA Chicago Holiday Party
Thursday, Dec 7
Timo Restaurant, 464 N. Halsted St
6:30 cocktails, 7:00 dinner

We're excited to announce that this year's holiday party will take place at Timo, formerly Thyme restaurant. Chef John Bubula made a solid reputation from his eight years serving fine French cuisine at Thyme. After an Italian tasting tour last summer, he decided to apply his same sense of distinguished cooking to a new Italian based menu.

Cost includes three-course dinner and bar
IDSA Members and their guests: $40
Non-Members and their guests: $70
IDSA Chicago volunteers: $30

As in previous years, we will be collecting gifts at the party for the South City Foster Parents Association to distribute to their kids. Most of the kids in the program are teenagers, so choose your gift wisely, or donate a gift card from a local store (an easier and safer contribution).

IDSA Members will receive a formal invitation in the mail, but you can register now here.
