The Search for Design

Where is design? We found it at Danze, Inc., as Michael Wurth discussed his Spring 2007 Innovation article on the role of design in the retail environment. Drawing on over three decades of experience at companies such as Frontgate and Danze, he detailed five common business models: the branded manufacturer; retail-driven, customized branded products; retail-driven, private label branded products; retail-direct product sourcing; and the emerging monolithic brand (retailer as product brand). As designers, most of us will likely encounter various business models throughout our careers, and it was helpful to better understand where design fits into each.

Discussion gravitated towards several major topics. We discussed the pros and cons of vertically integrated manufacturing structures, and talked about the potential risks (and cost savings) associated with leaving design and engineering to others. Private label was a hot button as well – it is often a threat to branded manufacturers, but can be a great source of income for retailers when done well (think Archer Farms from Target).

IDSA members left that night with bellies full of catered appetizers, and hands holding goodie bags from Danze. More importantly, however, we had made some new contacts and gained a greater understanding of how and where we can make the largest contributions, within a variety of settings.

Thanks to all for such a lively discussion. Urban Breakout will return on November 8th, when The Carlson Group in Lombard will discuss how to build brand equity. We look forward to seeing you soon!
