Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby are product designers based in London who met while studying architecture at the Royal College of Art. They founded barberosgerby in 1996 and went on to set up Universal Design Studio Ltd. in 2001. Since then they have worked for a diverse range of international clients including Cappelini, Magis, Flos, Classicon, Venini, Isokon Plus and Swarovski. In 2004, they won the Jerwood Prize for Applied Arts. Their work is on display in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Design Museum, London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.

How do tools change the way we work? Throughout history, the development of new tools has been adopted to increase efficiency and proficiency. In the design process, visualization tools are constantly evolving to aid the designer. Hypershot, a rendering software from Bunkspeed is geared specifically for the designer. It is intuitive, visual, and easy to use.

Chris Hart, Industrial Designer at Webb Scarlett deVlam, will be discussing where this software fits into the design process and doing some demos to highlight how new tools are helping to make the process more efficient.

IDSA Midwest Conference: Meaning

Meaning can be interpreted many ways regarding the design process. For example, "How can we as designers make the object more meaningful to the user?", "How can the result of a designer's insight make life experience more meaningful?", "How can we identify real problems and provide solutions to the everyday person?" and further, "How can we understand what is meaningful to a person at this time and make that object important, that experience relevant?"

It is these questions that we seek to investigate, explore and present at this conference. We will feature a presentation by Steve Diller from Cheskin, a strategic consulting and market research company from California. Steve is co-author of the book Making Meaning, How Successful Businesses Deliver Meaningful Customer Experiences. [makingmeaning.org]

Dunne and Raby short-circuit the design process by attending to our inner needs rather than our outer sensibilities. They use design as a critical medium to explore fields of science such as biotechnology and nanotechnology. Their project Evidence Dolls playfully probes the implications of DNA knowledge between lovers, while Designs for Fragile Personalities in Anxious Times continues their obsession with the psychological impact of an atomized society. It celebrates humans as being contradictory, complex and psychologically flawed.

This lecture is sponsored by the AIADO department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Promise of This Moment: Objects That Augment The Everyday

IDSA will be joining Chicago's Critical Mass. Please ride your bikes to Daley Plaza (look for the pink flamingo noodle), where we will meet and ride as one group throughout the streets of Chicago, cruising on our two-wheelers and reliving those exciting parade moments from our childhood days.

But showing off your riding skills is only half the fun! Following the ride, we will head over to The Blind Robin for a sketch competition on white drink coasters. Prizes will be awarded to those who exemplify design talent in various categories.

Director of Arup Global Foresight and Innovation Initiative. Guest Lecturer at Cambridge University School of Engineering, Assistant Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Architecture; Member, EU Sustainable Construction Techniques and Materials Panel (2004-2005); Adviser, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (2006-present).

Andrea Deplazes's work stems from innovative research to develop into sustainable practice throughout a broad spectrum of public and institutional projects. In this lecture, Deplazes reflects on Swiss methodologies that integrate disciplines including sociology, engineering, construction, and urban planning. Deplazes is a professor of architecture and construction at the ETH, Eigenössische Technische Hochschule, Zürich, and the co-owner of the architectural firm Bearth + Deplazes in Chur, Switzerland.

In May 2009 the last Space Shuttle to visit the Hubble Space Telescope successfully upgraded the telescope with new cameras and instruments as well as making repairs to allow the telescope to begin a new journey of discovery. During the course of 12 days in orbit the Hubble Servicing Mission 4, or STS-125, allowed two teams of astronauts to perform 5 spacewalks. In this talk, Astronaut Grunsfeld will describe the adventure of working in orbit on the Hubble Space Telescope and the exciting scientific results that the new instruments are providing.

Taryn will present a number of architectural projects that have used biomimicry principles, including the Singapore Art Center that uses a ventilation system based upon the hairs of polar bears. Taryn's training in ecology and the socio-industrial aspects of environmental issues provides a systems-based platform for discussion of biomimetic principles and methodologies. As a Biologist at the Design Table for the Guild, she specializes in Nature's functions at the ecosystem level. With a bird's eye view on planning, architectural and production challenges, she provides insights into ecological principles that can be used to enhance the way designs fit into the landscape of a place. She guides clients through a design process that asks the local organisms how to flourish in the regional habitat conditions and incorporate ecosystem nutrient cycling into landscape scale designs. Her assignments include consulting with corporate clients, researching biological strategies, facilitating workshops with design professionals and biologists, creating tools to assist in the design process and managing the Guild's internship program.

Speaker Biographies:
Paul Murray currently holds the position of Director of Environmental Safety and Sustainability for Herman Miller.

In addition to his responsibilities with Herman Miller, Paul participates in several work groups with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality; holds memberships with the Air and Waste Management Association, the National Association of Environmental Managers, and the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum; and serves on the Board of Directors for both the University of Michigan's Corporate Environmental Management Program and the International Design Center for the Environment. Additionally, he sits on the boards of several non-profit environmental organizations.

In 2002 Paul co-founded the Sustainable Research Group (SRG), an environmental consulting service created to help other companies implement green initiatives similar to Herman Miller's.

Paul and his family live in Hudsonville, Michigan.

Professor JohnPaul Kusz is an adjunct professor at the Center for Sustainable Enterprise at the Illinois Institute of Technology's Stuart Graduate School of Business, within the school's Environmental Management Program. He also teaches at the IIT Institute of Design.

He heads JPKusz Ltd., which develops technologies and strategies aimed at mitigating the negative environmental affects of commerce.

Formerly, he directed the product development and product stewardship groups at Safety-Kleen Corporation, an environmental services company. He has authored over 25 articles and presented at national and international conferences, speaking principally on environmental problem-solving through the product design process and organizational change.

He served on the U.S. EPA Peer Review Group's Product Life Cycle Assessment Project, on technical committees at the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and authored a study for the U.S. Congress Office of Technology Assessment on the correlation of corporate, economic, and environmental trends in the household chemical products industry. He holds 10 U.S. and foreign patents.

Remember those good 'ol college days where we had a "party bus" to transport us to and from events? We do, too - so we're bringing it back for one night only!

Please join IDSA Chicago for a discussion on rapid prototyping. Designcraft in Lake Zurich will be providing a light dinner, followed by a facilities tour and a discussion on avoiding common obstacles in rapid prototyping. To make the trip to the 'burbs a bit easier, we will be providing a shuttle bus (complete with snacks and beverages) from downtown Chicago to Lake Zurich and back. *Shuttle bus will depart PROMPTLY at 5:30pm from the Merchandise Mart.

IDSA Chicago is excited to participate in Chicagoland Bicycle Federation's Bank of America Bike the Drive! Join the chapter this Memorial Day weekend to experience the 15 mile long national treasure the way it was meant to be enjoyed: on a bike!

Sign-up through IDSA to either receive the discounted rates of $22 for members, $32 for non-members, and $5 for children under 13. You must sign-up before May 17 to receive the discounted rates.

This year, we'll be meeting at 7:15 AM at the north lion statue on the steps of the Art Institute (111 South Michigan, Chicago). We will begin with the north loop toward Hollywood, riding both 15 mile loops at a leisurely pace (for a total of 30 miles). Riders are free to go at their own pace, or to stick with the group for some lively conversation.

Riders will be able to pick up their packets at multiple locations and times before the ride. After registering, IDSA Chicago will contact each rider with additional pickup instructions.

Phil Corse, VP of HLB and Adjunct Professor at the Kellogg School of Management, will lead a discussion based on his article in the Spring 06 issue of IDSA's Innovation Magazine about developing products for a global marketplace. Specifically, the presentation will illustrate a stage-gate process that begins with extensive user research and culminates with an engineered product platform. The tools and techniques are illustrated and applied with two case histories. Both products demonstrate of the stage-gate process for China sourcing and utilize research methods such as ethnography, shopper shadowing and structured interviews, among others.

As a partner of Greenleaf & Papanek Publications, Doris is a co-author of three brain-based instructional books.

Sketching is core to the industrial design profession and is a vital tool for quickly and persuasively expressing your ideas. Too often our drawing skills are under developed or under utilized, resulting in incorrect perspective or lackluster execution.

Fortunately we have Jim Orr to help sharpen our pencils and show us how to breathe life back in to our work. Jim is the founder of the Advanced Formations Curriculum, developed around his commitment igniting creative brilliance in his fellow designers. Jim spent most of his career in the automobile industry, and now is a faculty professor at the Columbus College of Art & Design and conducts creativity and motivational workshops out of his own design studio. Two full-day (9AM - 4PM) sessions are being offered:
Friday 10/27: Beginner Session: work through one- and two-point perspective drawing, from definition through construction and application.

SOLD OUT Saturday 10/28: Advanced Session: Experiment with Jim's principles of "Power Drawing" and the "Language of Line" to bring dynamic form, position and texture to your work. Participants in this session will enjoy rediscovering the passion in their drawing.

Looks like it's time to dust off an old summer tradition. This month again will bring the IDSA Annual Summer Picnic in coordination with the Chicago and Minnesota chapters. We have reserved the Ottawa Lake Picnic Shelter "C", which has an open covered shelter with a charcoal-type grill and electrical outlets - this is the same shelter as last year. Volleyball, horseshoe pits, and many other activities are available nearby. Children and significant others are welcome at this family friendly event. Unfortunately there are dog restrictions on all of the shelter areas, so owners who bring pets will be doing so at their own risk.

If you are interested in camping out for the weekend, there will be a group of rugged individualists you can meet up with as well - just contact your chapter chair and they will put you in touch with the right people. Picnic basics (non-alcoholic beverages, grill-ables) will be provided - attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to pass. Maps and other details will follow as the event nears.

Chicago Sustainable Design Challenges
o2-Chicago (aka the Foresight Design Initiative) is challenging designers far and wide to address issues of sustainability. o2-Chicago is hosting two short-term competitions, both of which we hope will have repercussions far beyond their limited duration. Design Challenge #1: "Online Edition"
Challenges communication designers to help spread the word about sustainability issues by using their creative prowess to conjure compelling web banner ads about sustainability issues/events here in Chicago (which are probably similar to issues/events elsewhere). Design Challenge #2: "Paper or Plastic or...?"
Up to 2 trillion plastic bags are consumed globally each year! In its quest to see the city in which its based "evolve better," Foresight is challenging designers to think outside, well, the bag and to consider a combination of policy, communications/education, and product design solutions for this conundrum. Can designers begin to save at least one major city from this oil-consuming, environmental scourge? Join IDSA Michigan for their third annual IDSA Life-Long Learning Seminar, hosted by Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. "Power Drawing" introduces the participants to the powerful "language of line" and reveals how form, position and texture accelerate our ability to
generate ideas in a two-dimensional format. In "Power Media", Jim explores through various media the principles of "Saturation" and "Generation" and how they can be developed with personality structure and purpose & function to serve as the genesis of surface development. We're keeping the same low fees as last year... ranging from $40 to $130 depending on how many days you attend, your member status, and your registration date. Fee's for each day include a catered meal and basic supplies (prismacolor pencils & paper). Those in attendance on Saturday will need to bring additional supplies: value COOL gray markers 1,3,5 & 7 as well as assorted Prismacolor pencils and NuPastels. Furilla, a highly-poseable and monocular creature, was discovered by Portland, OR -based industrial designer and artist Toren Orzeck. Since his original discovery Orzeck has further bio-engineered several mutations of Furilla including the amazing cross-breed known as Bearilla. He has also overseen the creation of several short documentary films covering the previously unknown Furilla species. Orzeck will be displaying his discoveries and short films at Rotofugi. And oh yeah, Furilla Rocks!

Building on the success of the Book Club, the Chicago chapter is setting up a new social event for Chicago Designers. Paul Hatch: "We found that the chief attraction of the Book Club is the social aspect of the meeting, which typically only briefly focuses on the chosen book. Discourse then ran the full gambit of topics."

Fight Club is a more targeted discussion, around a chosen topic of debate such as a film, TV show or current exhibition. The first meeting will be centered on the film Matrix Reloaded. Here, two volunteers will take extreme pro and contra angles to debate the merits and pitfalls of the film, the actors, and the genre. Everyone else can add their spice to the debate on either side.

First Rule of Fight Club: There are no debating rules.
Second Rule of Fight Club: There can only be one winner.

Being able to articulate and defend your opinion is one of the most
important skills a designer could have, and one that is rarely taught in school. Join us on June 26 for the very first IDSA verbal slugfest.

Join us for a lecture titled, Whither Chicago? A newcomer's take on the state of Chicago Architecture delivered by Ned Cramer, Curator of the Chicago Architecture Foundation, where he is responsible for exhibitions and for overall creative direction.

For eight years Cramer worked as an editor at Architecture magazine, most recently as executive editor. While at Architecture, he collaborated with writers such as Paul Goldberger and Witold Rybczynski, artists such as Doug Aitkin and Justine Kurland, and architects such as Diller + Scofidio and Venturi Scott Brown. He also orchestrated special thematic issues including "Postpostmodernism" and "The Arizona School." Previously, Cramer worked at the Menil Collection in Houston and at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. He attended the Rice University School of Architecture and is the recipient of an Arts Administration Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Cramer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.

IDSA Chicago’s Second FIGHT CLUB, November 20.

After the success of the first Fight Club we knew there had to be a follow up debate, so here it is: Sex and Violence.

Most of Europe and Canada have less than 100 mortalities per year through violence, whereas the US averages around 11,000 through guns alone. The US has also cornered the market in its pornography business and yet has one of the tightest restrictions on nudity on TV. Is it not also contradictory to blur out partial nudity while we can watch decapitations in full gory detail on primetime TV?

This no-holds barred ‘street debate’ will cover these topics and also discuss the effects sex & violence has on TV viewers, what censorship does, etc.

What is Fight Club? Picture this:
– Two fighters under a spotlight, circled by 50 onlookers.
– One subject matter, two radically opposing opinions.
– Darkened empty loft space, multimedia backdrop.
– Angry questions, careful answers, and heartfelt arguments.
– One winner.

Two volunteers -the fighters- take extreme for and against stances to debate the merits and pitfalls of the subject. Everyone else adds their spice to the debate on either side.

First Rule of Fight Club: There are no debating rules.
Second Rule of Fight Club: There can only be one winner.

August 20: Book Club – "Food For Thought" lead by Paul Hatch.

Summer having finally arrived, we get involved with the more pleasurable things in life such as sun, food, drink, and reading a good book. In the spirit of this, the next Book Club will look at two controversial books on the food industry (which you should read on the beach sipping your Daiquiri...).

The first book, The Jungle by Upton Sinclair had had a full third of the pages censored shortly after it's original release in 1905, because of the strong political and social comment, as well as it's stomach-churning gory details about the meat packing industry in Chicago. Today's edition has been restored to its original full glory.

For those wanting something a just little easier to swallow, try Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser. Similar to The Jungle, it reveals the better-left-kept secrets of the food industry, and how the global food corporations ironically "both feed and feed off the young".

August 24: Picnic/BBQ jointly with the Wisconsin Chapter, Southern District of the Kettle Moraine State Park in Wisconsin.

We will be serving a late lunch/early dinner from 1-4pm at the Rice Lake Pavilion. We will have soft drinks, condiments, grilled meats, and grilled veggie entrees. About, With and For is a one day conference hosted by the Institute of Design at IIT on October 19th, for sharing methods, processes and tools with professionals from many fields for furthering the practice of understanding people hosted by the Institute of Design at IIT.

C. Ben Mitchell is a professor of Bioethics in Medicine at Trinity Evangelical College. He is called upon to testify on ethics in medicine in front of the Senate and the House of Representatives on a regular basis. He is also the editor of, Ethics & Medicine: An International Journal of Bioethics at www.ethicsandmedicine.com. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Center for Bioethics & Human Dignity at www.cbhd.org

John Grimes is a professor of Computer Imaging and Interactive Technology in IIT's Institute of Design program.

Francine Gemperle is the lead Design Researcher at Carnegie Mellon University with the Wearable Computing Group and the Project on People and Robots.

Michelle Berryman has just received her Masters in Wearable Computing from Georgia Tech. She has participated as an expert in her field on panel discussions like this one all over the country. January 15: Cooper Woodring - On the Witness Stand for Design, 6:30.

presented by IDSA Chicago in collaboration with the National Housewares Section

Cooper C. Woodring is past-President and past-Chairman of the IDSA. He earned a Bachelor's degree in ID from University of Kansas, and a Master's degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has received the IDSA Personal Recognition Award, given to only ten other designers in history, one being Raymond Loewy.

Woodring is the former president of Better Mousetraps, Inc, a firm that invents, patents, and designs new products, then offers exclusive rights to manufacturers in return for equitable royalty.

Woodring currently works as an expert witness in patent infringement cases. He has received about 30 US design and utility patents, has testified before the US Congress, the US Senate, and the US Patent and Trademark Office. Since 1992 he has served in about 25 cases.

In his presentation on Monday January 15, Woodring will talk about some of his more personal and unusual experiences during the course of his work as an expert witness in design patent litigation.

During the past ten years the need for Foster parents has risen at a dramatic rate, and so too, the need for gifts that can make the holiday season brighter.

Contributing a small gift through the Chicago Chapter is direct, personal and an important way to help our local community. Even though there is tremendous need for contributions throughout the nation because of the September attack, I hope you will not forget Chicago's children this season.

Director of Advanced Industrial Design for Johnson Controls, he's responsible for overseeing product concept development, future product conceptualization and visualization for all advanced seating, and interior industrial design studios globally. Prior to this appointment, Fluharty served as advanced design manager for the former Prince Corporation (acquired by Johnson Controls in 1996) since 1995, where he oversaw operations at the Holland, Michigan studio.

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier, designer of the Getty Center in Los Angeles and Church of the Year 2000 now under construction in Rome, will speak at the Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S. Michigan Ave. at 7pm in the Rubloff Auditorium. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

May 19: An Evening with Pattie Moore - from Loewy to Gore and then some...

Please join us for an unforgettable evening with Pattie Moore, an internationally renowned gerontologist and designer serving as a leading authority on the requirements and behaviors of the elderly and all people as they progress throughout their lifespan. Moore promotes accessibility and usability through "Universal Design", a methodology for which Moore is credited as a founder. For a period of three years (1979-1982), in an exceptional and daring experiment, Moore traveled throughout the United States and Canada disguised as a woman more than eighty years of age. She writes about this experience in her book titled, " Disguised: A True Story".

Ms. Moore holds undergraduate degrees in Graphic Design and Industrial and Environmental Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology, a Masters of Arts Degree in Psychology and Counseling, and a Masters of Education in Human Development (Social Gerontology) from Columbia University, completion of advanced studies in Biomechanics at New York's University Medical School and Rusk Institute. Moore has been seen on Oprah, Jay Leno and the Tonight Show, David Letterman and the Late Night Show, and Phil Donohue, among others. She is also a frequent guest lecturer and has had feature articles in nearly all major US publications. Moore currently resides in Phoenix, AZ.

June 12: Ben Fether lecture: Design As It Affects The Future Office.

Ben Fether is co-director, with Richard Miles, of the Fether Miles Group which includes FM Design and FM Model makers. His interest in design and social context has influenced the FM philosophy and the evolution of it's comprehensive approach to design and development. Ben is involved in the ongoing development of FM and in many of its current projects. These range from consumer technology products, furniture and packaging, to transportation and building systems. Awards: G Mark; NeoCon; IIDA; iF; IDEA and inclusion in the MOMA permanent collection. Ben is Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers and of the Royal Society of Arts. He is an International Member of the Industrial Designers Society of America.

September 18-20: IDSA National Education Conference, "Education Gumbo", University of Southwestern Louisiana, Lafayette, LA.

The conference will kick off at noon on Sept. 18th. In addition to paper presentations, we'll learn about the new think3 software donation program. Joe Costello, chair and CEO of think3 will challenge the paradigm of education instruction methods (we want to listen!) Representatives of ITEA (International Technology Education Association) will talk about the new IDSA/ITEA initiative to deliver industrial design education to K-12 schools. After the education conference concludes at noon on Wednesday Sept. 20th we will provide a bus to take you to the Fairmont Hotel-the headquarters of "Design Gumbo," so that you can attend the opening of the Design Gallery and national conference.

September 20-23: IDSA International Design Conference - "Design Gumbo", Fairmont Hotel, New Orleans, LA.

Come join IDSA in the Big Easy to catch up on some of the latest trends and recharge your design batteries. "Design Gumbo," which will combine concrete learning opportunities with a little whimsy and inspiration, will center around three themes: "Cookin' up the Future," a look at "what's next" in design; "Thinkin' Outside the Bowl," a focus on different ways to look at the issues we face; and "If You Can't Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen," an attempt to push attendees out of their comfort zones.

Please join the Chicago Chapter IDSA to experience Redmoon Theater Group's 6th Annual All Hallow's Eve Ritual Celebration at Logan Square. Meet at 6:30 at The Boulevard Cafe, 3137 W Logan Blvd, for a ritual toast and conversation. We will leave the Cafe at 7:30 pm sharp to walk the strip and experience the show.
