Sr. Industrial Designer (Contract)

Posted: 2.12.2008

S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc.
Racine, WI

Position Description

This position will be responsible for owning and executing the Industrial Design portion of a particular project from the end of Ideation through Commercialization and Launch. Specifically, the candidate will start with functional working prototypes that have been tested successfully with consumers and the market proposition has been proven out. Little ID attention has been applied to the current prototypes, so the first portion of the development phase will be to broadly explore design options for the product and develop a new product language that is appropriate for the company and brand equity. As this will be a global launch, the expectation is that the exploration will include at least an initial collaboration with several international ID firms to provide a global design perspective before finalizing the desired design intent. This position will then be responsible for executing the design through launch, with whatever internal and external resources are most appropriate.

This project will also require significant ergonomic refinement, as well as on-going collaboration with product engineering, manufacturing, marketing, packaging, sales, etc. Additionally, this particular project also has an environmentally focused component.

Periodic international and domestic travel will be required, perhaps totaling 10-20% of total time. This position is full-time and will require the candidate to be on-site at S.C. Johnson and Son, Inc. the majority of the time. Flexible working arrangements and telecommuting are possible options that can be arranged on an individual basis.

The position will be hired as a contract position, administered by a third party employment agency, but will be fully integrated into the project team. The term of the contract is currently for a period of at least 12 months, with the potential for extension. The position is available for immediate filling.

Preferred Background Requirements

  • Undergrad 4-year or higher degree in Industrial Design
  • 5+ years experience in relevant product development processes
  • Experience particularly with the downstream portion of a process, i.e. taking a proven market idea with a first generation functional prototype and developing it through launch.
  • Experience collaborating with a multi-functional team to support the launch of a new product, ie. engineering, manufacturing, marketing, sales, etc.
  • Experience in managing external ID resources
  • Experience in international design
  • Experience with translating brand equity needs into a design language
  • Experience with ergonomic and human factors design considerations
  • Experience with environmentally focused product lines
  • Experience in first-hand user research
