Using Story to Design Products and Experiences

Using industrial and product design, human-centered design, scenario planning, design research, and design heuristics/thinking, designers give form to concepts and bring successful offerings to market and/or to deliver profitable differentiated experiences. This conference seeks to explore the use of "Story" in existing objects and the use of "Storytelling" in the development of new objects and experiences.

5 reasons

As design evolves so does IDSA; so do our members and so do our opportunities for connecting designers with designers, businesses with designers, manufacturers with designers, technology with designers and design with society.

HFES Meeting

Rapid Fire

Chicago IDSA had over 40 students and professionals come together on a rainy Saturday morning to talk about portfolios and how to get a job in design.

The students were give one on one and in many cases three on one situations to present their best work to a group of professional designers.

In a "speed dating" style arrangement, the students rotated to a new group of professionals every 15 minutes or so to present their work again.

By the time the event came to a close the students met 25+ professionals and presented their work ten times, each time getting feedback and advice from the group.  Columbia College hosted the event in the Wong Center on Wabash. After four hours of fast and furious presentation, students and pros alike emerged to enjoy a sunny afternoon.

March Highlights

International Home and Housewares Show

Int'l Housewares Show (14-16)

IDSA Chicago had a wonderful Housewares prequel brunch! Designers and students from the Chicago area were able to connect and network...while preparing for their ultimate destination, the 2010 International Housewares at McCormick Place. IDSA Chicago is proud of this successful brunch campaign and can't wait for future IDSA events! IDSA saw 10+ designers interact and build relationships while they ate a great breakfast.

Following the great IDSA Brunch, everybody headed towards the 2010 International Housewares at McCormick Place. This year, the Housewares show was full of new innovative products...from latest from Karim Rashid and Ettore Sottsass, or the newest kitchen products from Kitchen Aid and Joseph and Joseph.

Professional designers were also exposed to the up and coming design rock stars that were showcased at this year's International Housewares Student Competition. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign highlighted the student show with four winners, 1st place winner Teddy Lu, 2nd place winner Emily Maskey, 3rd place winner Colin Lake and Honorable Mention winner Brian Moy. Congrats to all the other student designers as well, it was one of a kind competition with students going above and beyond to impress this year's judges.

IDSA Chicago had a great day, we would like to thank everyone who came out, we hope to see you at our next student/professional event! Come join us, there is a seat for you!

Housewares Design Mixer

m

This year's International Home+Housewares Show was a hit with 60,000 attendees and 2,000 exhibits from over 35 countries.

One of the main features of this year's show time festivities was the TEAMS Design open house, hosted at their newly expanded studio space.

Highlights from the Home + Housewares Show were discussed over refreshments as designers and enthusiastic show-goers mingled in good company and engaged in conversation with friends and associates.

Some fascinating and cutting edge design work was on display while the fresh expansion area bustled with creative energy. It's no surprise that the generously proportioned studio expansion is designed thoughtfully, continuing to maximize workflow, inspiration and connectivity. The mindful construction of the space served equally well to encourage interaction, networking and revelry.

Advancement for Women in Design

m

The “Advancement for Women in ID” panel discussion was held at TEAMS Design’s new studio space.  Collectively hosted by IDSA’s Diversity Section, Houswares Section, and Chicago Chapter, this panel featured women in leadership roles including, Jill Solberg, Rachael Powers, Alice Jandrisits, Marianne Grisdale, Nancy Perkins, and Ellen Carnahan.

Although most of the audience was women, much of the discussion was applicable to designers of both genders.  Topics ranged from limitations designers put on themselves, to pursuing advanced degrees, to balancing one’s work life and family life.

The panelists discussed key factors that had the most impact on their careers, including passion and enjoyment from work, self-honesty, and networking.  All the panelists indicated the importance of meeting people, keeping up relationships, and returning favors.  The IDSA has been an important source to help making and keeping these connections in the industry.

Finding a mentor was a recommendation the panelists shared, although not all have had a mentor during their careers.  Those who did said it is helpful to have a long-term relationship with a mentor over time, since they have a longitudinal view of your life / career and get to know you well.

Finally, there was a lot of discussion around learning to speak the language of business by considering books, business courses, and even an advanced degree.  After the panel discussion, the panelists created a list of suggested readings for women in design, many applying designers in general.

  1. The High Price of Motherhood, Anne Crittenden
  2. When Everything Changed, The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present, Gail Collins
  3. Harvard Business Review article, “Women and the Labyrinth of Leadership” Alice Eagly and Linda Carli   (attached to this e-mail)
  4. Change by Design by Tim Brown  (Design Thinking, business + design strategy)
  5. The Game-Changer by A.G. Lafley (Innovation in business)
  6. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell (2000- a bit dated, but interesting regarding trends and the reasons behind them.  Blink + Outliers- other books by the author)
  7. Connected by Nicholas Christakis (the power of social networking)
  8. The Design of Things to Come + Creating Breakthrough Products by Cagan + Craig Vogel (MPD course books - interesting reads)
