Karim
Rashid was born in 1960 in Cairo, Egypt, but raised
mainly in Toronto, Canada. He received an Industrial
Design degree in 1982 from Carleton University
in Ottawa, Canada and pursued graduate design
studies in Naples, Italy, with Ettore Sottsass
among others. He then worked at Rodolfo Bonetto
Studio, Milan. On his return to Canada, he worked
for 7 years with KAN Industrial Designers. While
at KAN, he also co-founded and designed Babel
Fashion from 1985-91.
He opened his own practice in
New York City in 1993 and now lists voluminous
global clients, including Nambe (USA), Umbra
(Canada), Magis (Italy), Cappellini (Italy),
Dakis Joaunau (Greece), myhotel (UK), Vitro
Crystal (Portugal), Artemide (Italy) to name
a few.
His monograph “I Want to Change the World”
was published in 2001 by Universe/Rizzoli and
is now in its second pressing. Karim was also
invited to edit the International Design Yearbook
2003 (Calman and King publishing), and in Spring
2004 will be the next subject in a series on
Industrial Designers published by Chronicle
books.

Bruce Nussbaum - BusinessWeek

|
Bruce Nussbaum is BusinessWeek’s
editorial page editor, a position he assumed in
February 1993. He is also an essayist and commentator
on economic and social issues. Mr. Nussbaum edits
the magazine's weekly Economic Viewpoint column
and also writes frequently on design. He analyzes
the annual Industrial Designers Excellence Awards
and the BusinessWeek/Architectural Record AIA Awards
for the magazine.
Mr. Nussbaum joined BusinessWeek in 1977 and
started the international finance section. In
1980, he became head of the foreign news section,
focusing on international finance, international
business and technological change. In 1985, he
left BusinessWeek to become executive editor of
Manhattan, Inc, and returned to BusinessWeek in
1986 as senior writer. Prior to joining BusinessWeek,
Mr. Nussbaum was a reporter for the Far Eastern
Economic Review in Asia and The American Banker
in New York.
In addition to his numerous cover stories for
the magazine, Mr. Nussbaum is the author of two
books: The World after Oil: the Shifting Axis
of Power and Wealth and Good Intentions, an inside
look at medical research on AIDS.

Daniel Formosa, Ph.D. is a consultant
in design and research. His background includes
product design, ergonomics and biomechanics.
Dan was on the design team for IBM’s first
personal computer, and the original line of
OXO Good Grips kitchen tools. Current projects
range from healthcare to print design to consumer
electronics.

Martin Gierke
Martin is Corporate Identity
Manager at Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria IL. He
is responsible for identity standards, related
consulting activities and brand education for
a global enterprise of over 75,000 employees.
Prior to joining Caterpillar in 2001, Martin
served as Vice President of Industrial Design
at Black & Decker Inc. in Baltimore, Maryland.
He received a degree in Art and Industrial Design
from the University of Wisconsin Stout in Menomonie,
Wisconsin and an MBA from Loyola College in
Baltimore. Martin co-developed an Industrial
Design program at Towson University in Baltimore
where he also taught design. He is a current
advisory board member of The Design Management
Institute, and a 25-year member of IDSA, where
he served as jurist of the 2001 IDEA awards.
Gary Bryant
Gary Bryant is Industrial Design
Manager at Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, IL. He
has been with Caterpillar for fifteen years
and has managed the Industrial Design team for
the last five. Gary has a BS in Industrial Design
from the Georgia Institute of Technology. During
his career at Caterpillar, Gary has provided
direct styling input on multiple machine families
and now manages eight internal designers and
three external design consultancies around the
world. His recent focus has been in crafting
a strategic near and long term vision for building
a consistent "look and feel" into
all Caterpillar products. This is a directive
from the Executive Office after Gary has worked
to highlight the value of Industrial Design
in supporting Caterpillar's overall Brand image.

Velma Velázquez - IDEO

Velma L. Velázquez
joined IDEO in 1998, bringing her knowledge and
passion for human-centered design to the Palo
Alto studios. She has worked in the industry as
a human factors specialist since 1992, and holds
a M.S. in Human Factors from Wright State University
and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of
Puerto Rico. |

Cat Chow is
an artist, designer, educator, and musician. Her
work has been included in several exhibitions,
most prominently at The Metropolitan Museum of
Art, New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art,
Chicago. She has won many awards including the
Louis Comfort Tiffany Biennial Award and teaches
at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Her work has been featured in The New York Times,
Women's Wear Daily, Elle, Paper, Surface and Black
Book. She earned a B.S. from Northwestern University
(1995), where she majored in Theater with a concentration
in Costume Design. Her new music project is the

Larry Bell
is Professor/Director of the U. of Houston’s
Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture
(SICSA). He is also co-founded Space Industries,
Inc, a private company that grew to employ more
than 8,000 professionals.
Larry received B. Architecture
and MFA-ID degrees from UIUC and headed the
UIUC ID graduate program for 8 years. He has
served on the national IDSA Board and as a Contributing
Editor for ID Magazine.

A first-rate illustrator with
sixteen years experience, Scott directs the development
of environmental design concepts. His role includes
coordinating strategies with the client, Design
Forum project managers and environmental and graphic
designers. Scott’s clients include: Honda,
Bed Bath and Beyond, Dunkin’ Donuts, Frontgate,
Mazda, Ron Jon Surf Shop and Three Dog Bakery.

Randy Sandlin + Greg Lubbering

Randall and his design team
are responsible for designing the Sanitaire,
Eureka, and Electrolux floorcare products for
the global appliance manufacturer AB Electrolux.
As the Director, he was appointed as the leader
for a company wide innovation and growth project.
He has worked for the Electrolux group for 12
years, beginning with an internship during his
junior year of college. Prior to launching his
professional career with AB Electrolux he worked
for Advanced Formations, Chaney and Associates
and EBCO Manufacturing.
Highlights of his career with
AB Electrolux include his contributions as a
creative stimulus for the global design organization
as a member of the Concept Design Team. He worked
in Stockholm, Sweden for over two years as the
Team Leader of the Electrolux Concept Design
Team. During this time he worked on numerous
projects targeted for the European market that
challenged the definition of traditional appliances.
Randall holds a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Industrial Design from The
Ohio State University.

Herb Velazquez
holds an MS degree in Industrial Design from the
Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology
in Chicago and a BFA from the School of the Art
Institute of Chicago. Herb currently leads industrial
design initiatives for Kimberly-Clark Corporation
in his role as Senior Design Manager in the Packaging
and Aesthetics Research Center.
Prior to joining Kimberly-Clark, Herb was Manager
of Product Planning and Design at Siemens Medical
Systems. Herb started his design career at GE
Medical Systems. Herb has served on the jury for
IDSA’s Excellence Awards in 1995 and on
the jury for the American Center for Design’s
Beacon Design Award in 1993.

Bryce has spent his career working in the research
and design of hand-held products. In addition

Appliance/Laboratory Equipment in the Appliance
Design Excellence in Design competition and three
reddot Awards, Metaphase has also received the
Design of the Decade Award, nine Industrial Design
Excellence Awards (IDEAs) for the best-designed
products in America from the Industrial Designers
Society of America and Business Week, and two
Design Excellence Awards from ID magazine He serves
on the Industrial Design Advisory Panel for the
University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where
he received a Masters degree in Industrial Design
and Ph.D. in Kinesiology.

Tucker Viemeister,
President Springtime-USA, created a studio with
RockwellGroup dedicated to making cool things
for Coca-Cola. Tucker is named after the car his
father, Read Viemeister helped design. He helped
found some important design organizations: Razorfish's
physical design capability, frogdesign's New York
office, and Smart Design (where he helped design
OXO "GoodGrips"). He is Vice President
of the Architectural League of New York and a
Fellow of the IDSA. BusinessWeek called him "design
guru."

Denis Weil,

likes to push the boundaries of linking design
with business. Denis is a guest lecturer at the

Technology, on the topic of “Business Prototyping”
and holds a Master’s degree in Design Planning
from the Institute of Design. Prior
to joining McDonald’s in 2001, Denis spent
12 years in Product Development and Brand Management

Brett Vladika
is the manager of the Discovery Department at
Brooks Stevens Design in Grafton, Wisconsin. As
a research, project and client manager, he has
shepherded projects of multiple levels of complexity
from start-up into consumer, trend and discovery
research and analysis, through finalization and
production ramp-up. Throughout his career he has
worked with clients involved in a variety of industries,
spanning consumer, industrial, medical and commercial
markets.

Earl Powell
has been president of the Design Management Institute
since 1985. During his tenure, many innovative
programs have been initiated, and the Institute
has developed an international reputation for
excellence in design management research, scholarship,
and world-class educational programs. He holds
an undergraduate degree in industrial design,
an MA and MFA in painting, and has worked as an
industrial designer, design manager, artist, college
instructor, and academic dean. In the fall of
2002 Powell received an honorary doctor of letters
from the University of Westminster/London for
his numerous contributions to design management.

Paul Hatch is
President of the Chicago branch of the Industrial
Design Consultancy TEAMS Design. After
studying in Newcastle, England he has worked professionally
in England, Germany and in the US at design consultancies
including Schroerdesign, IDEA Design, and TEAMS
Design.
After working for TEAMS Design
in Germany for five years, Paul opened their US
branch in Chicago in 1998. TEAMS Design is one
of the longest running design consultancies in
the world and has now received over 1000 Design
awards, a unique achievement.
Paul has had articles published
in design and business magazines and is also known
for founding and running a now televised debate
called 'Fight Club'. In September 2004 Paul was
elected IDSA District Midwest VP. He also tends
to talk a lot..

| Jim Wicks

As Vice President and director
of the consumer experience design organization,
Jim Wicks is responsible for user interface
and industrial design of Motorola personal communications
products. Jim joined Motorola in 2001 as director
of user interface design and human factors and
functioned in this role until 2004 at which
time he was appointed to his current role.
Jim holds a BFA in industrial
design from the University of Illinois and Graduate
degree in design from Nihon University Japan.
Jim spent many years in Japan, first as a designer
for GK Design associates and then with Sony
Corporation. He later joined Sony’s design
group in the US with a focus on personal communications,
computing and new audio products, culminating
with his establishment of the Sony innovation
and design center in San Francisco. After spending
one year with Sapient Corporation as Director
of Strategy for their San Francisco office,
Jim took the opportunity to join Motorola with
the hopes of applying his many years of design
leadership experience and vision to the strategic
design opportunities presented Motorola.
Jim is the recipient of multiple global design
awards and holds over 50 design and utility
patents. His strengths in user centered design
practices, high quality design execution and
cross functional design management position
Motorola Consumer Experience Design well at
this exciting time in the market.

Stephen Melamed -
Tres Design Group |
Stephen Melamed,
IDSA, began his studies in theoretical physics
at Boston University and later received a Masters
Degree with distinction in Industrial Design from
the University of Illinois at Chicago. Melamed
also studied under Bauhaus artist/designer Werner
Graeff. He has been awarded a Design Fellowship
by the National Endowment for the Arts & Humanities
and a research grant from the R. Buckminster Fuller
Foundation, and his firm has received a Silver
Medal, IDEA Award for design excellence, sponsored
by Business Week and IDSA. He authored “By
Design: Museum Environments for All” and
was a speaker at the First International Interdisciplinary
Design Conference at the United Nations in New
York City. Melamed also serves on the Board of
Directors of the not-for-profit national design
advocacy group, Design For Democracy (D4D). He
has written numerous articles on the topics of
industrial design, interdisciplinary product development
and design research. He is currently the managing
partner of the Chicago based Industrial Design
consulting firm, Tres Design Group. In addition
to his duties as a principal of the firm, he is
Clinical Professor of Interdisciplinary Product
Development/Industrial Design at the University
of Illinois at Chicago, as well as a featured
lecturer at universities and conferences throughout
the country. |
